Henry Hallpike

About
  • About Us
  • Henry Hallpike Jewellers was originally located in Shepherds Bush, West London. One afternoon during the Blitz the Hallpikes were holding a meeting in the shop when it suffered a direct hit from a German bomb killing all the directors; ironically Charles Hallpike who was fighting in France was the sole survivor of the three brothers. The manager who had been sent across the road to the pub salvaged what he could, and with the help of Camerer Cuss set up Hallpike in Kensington. After the war the Hallpikes had lost the appetite to continue the business and agreed to sell to the Cuss’ on the proviso that the Hallpike name was kept in memoriam.
  • Camerer Cuss & Co. was a partnership of David Kuss and Andrew Kammerer who came to London from Germany in 1845 to import and sell Black Forest clocks. The Kammerers and the Kusses were farmers in neighbouring villages in the Black Forest and were related by marriage. David Kuss was an astute and energetic businessman who brought a new dimension to the business and established the first Camerer Cuss shop in Shepherds Bush in 1879.
  • At the beginning of the First World War there was much ill feeling, even violence, towards anybody with a German sounding name. In some parts of London windows were smashed and shops wrecked. Reports circulated that the police had raided the Shepherds Bush premises, which brought a swift response in the form of an announcement in the national press “we are loyal British subjects”. Even so it was felt prudent to change the spelling of the Family name from Kuss to Cuss.
  • Since 1942 Hallpikes have served many generations of the same families and know many customers by name.
